4.0 seem to be a sacred thing. If you got one, it is an undisputed sign that you understand that class. Yet many people say it seems so hard to get that shiny thing. When I first entered my freshmen year, I remember looking all my seniors with their shiny 3.9 GPA. It seemed impossible.

Everyone said: “No way Soma, 4.0 GPA means you won’t have a life at all, and that still doesn’t guarantee you a 4.0”. I looked at my brand new official transcript, and I said to myself, “I want it to be all 4.0 because I want to transfer to a good university.” Guess what happened? This is what I achieve:

1. Successive 4.0 average GPA for two years.

2. Student of the Month of May 2007. (click, u gotta see it before continue)

3. English is not even my native language!!!

4. A beautiful two years relationship with the best girlfriend I’ve ever got. We went out often on weekends.

5. I make great friends there.

I had a beautiful life, I had the 4.0, and I was even active in school. Who said you can’t do that?

So all you lazy people out there, “SHUT THE HELL UP”!!!

Just because u can’t do it, don’t assume other people can’t do it!!!

Listen, YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT IF U REALLY WANT IT!!

You can get a 4.0 if you really want it!

This blog is dedicated to help all of you to get that shiny 4.0. If you have a low average GPA, a 4.0 will shoot your average GPA to heaven. If you have good GPA, I’ll help you get that last tiny bits of GPA up to 4.0. If you have many 4.0, help out, share some tips J

My personal feeling towards it is:

4.0 is perfection. It is completely different than a 3.9. It means you work hard, you pay attention to every detail, and you have what it takes to set your target high and reach it.

What do you guys think about a 4.0 GPA? Please leave comment, you don’t have to make an account to leave one. It would be wonderful if we can have a community of students with passion for academic success.

Well… I am a senior undergrad in UCLA. To be honest, maintaining a 4.0 GPA in a good university is not as easy as it sounds. It required LOTS of determination and for transfer students, HUGE level of confidence. But nothing is impossible and here are some tips of how you can maintain a 4.0 (at least it worked for me):

    1) Cut down on the amt of time spent outside school/home.
    2) Read the materials before going to class
    3) Always ask your TA for help. Most professors are not very helpful.
    4) Constantly do your assignments. Even if its due next week.

But all these are far from sufficient. the most crucial factor to getting straight A’s is willpower. I have screwed up midterms several times and when i said ’screwed’, i means C or D. In fact, I was going to classes, not understanding a single stuff the Prof said. “believe” is the fundamental factor to success. Like the Kungfu Panda said: “you just have to believe that you are special!” I believed and continued working hard. To date, I’ve turned countless number of Cs into A+s. It’s possible!

I don’t 100% agree with you Soma. While some people can have a good ‘life’, some might not have any ‘life’ in pursuing this unlucky #4.

Let me put it this way, I was dropped out of high school (the damn Regina Pacis!!!) and then got in to one of the worst private high schools in Jakarta you can ever find, the notorious St. Bellarminus High School, not to mention that I used to be always on the bottom 30% of any class I had taken. I am not exaggerating. But now, I have that magic # people dream about on my useless UCLA transcript and I am majoring in Electrical Engineering (senior).

If an ex-fucked up student like me can do it, how ’bout you?

    inaG,

I think you’re taking what I meant in a wrong way…. I’m showing all I achieved to motivate people that what they thought impossible is POSSIBLE. You see, for me, having a ‘life’ is my new development. I’ve always been good with studying since high school, but having a balanced life while keeping a 4.0 GPA is very very new for me.

Thank you so much for sharing and showing everyone here that what people thought impossible is possible.

I used to think that 4.0 is not useful at some point, but I’ve met some people that shows me how useful it is to get that 4.0. It’s not just for our school now, but also for later in life. I’ll make an article about that later… for now, let’s just see a practical example: it’s almost a ‘LAW’ that require applicants to have a high GPA in most well paid job. the fact you have a 4.0 GPA makes you the highest in this category right. how could that not be useful?

I am a freshman in college, and i am really busting my butt in school, while trying to study for the stae boards for a nursing degree i got in high school. my eyes are bruning and i need some inspiration. based on my exam scores thus far I should be getting all A’s come this december. I wanted to know, what constitutes a 4.0 and can u have A-’s and still acheive a 4.0. hit me back the email is Landr@hunter.cuny.edu. thanks Linzy– on my grind, in school that is, from Brooklyn

    Hi Linzy,

If you’re looking for inspiration and tips, this blog is definitely the right place for you. Look around the articles, I myself as the writer get very inspired by one of the student, Julia Chin, for keeping her 4.0 GPA for 3 years. I don’t think you can get a 4.0 average if you got an A- just once, that’s what makes it so hard to get a 4.0 average, but it’s possible, I’ve had friends graduating with a 4.0 GPA and double majoring! I’m glad you are making the effort, see what comes out, I remember my first time getting a 4.0 GPA in college, I was so happy.
I think what’s important is you always make your best effort to get a 4.0 GPA in every class and what’s even more important is you’re getting the education from college. Keep it up and Good luck to you!

I believe its possible and also have a balance life, but it all depends on your MAJOR. If it’s an engineering major its almost impossible to keep a shiny 4.0. Also it depends on which school, if its a competitive school were half of your class gets 100% on the midterm, and you screw up just in a small section you end up being in the bottom of the curve. If you aren’t a engineering major feel happy you can have a life and still achieve a 4.0

Don’t give people illusions that they can get a 4.0 and have a life. That’s assuming you are naturally smart, which not everyone is. Some people don’t care for a 4.0 either. I am perfectly happy with a 3.8 gpa and minimal work, although i could get a 4.0 if i put it a few extra hours. I am trying to get through university by doing the least work to the greatest effect. If you really want to be smart, don’t kill yourself trying to get a 4.0, it’s not all it’s cracked out to be.

I will be a freshmen student this coming fall semester. Also, I am positive that I want to do a pre med. What do you think will be best major for pre med (would a science major be beneficial?) and what advice do you have for a freshman student to excel and receive a 4.0

I agree with Jopu that in engineering it’s difficult to get a 4.0. In most cases, students who do not survive the sophomore level in engineering end up dropping out. My advise for students who are trying to pursue an engineering degree is to take master these classes first: physics 1 and 2, geometry, trigonometry, calculus 1,2,3, and chemistry 1 and 2 .

    woah!!! u are a genius!
every new semester i tell myself i will work my hardest and get a 4.0 but never actually got it. =( it makes me depressed. Instead my GPA has been going down. i’ll be going into 3rd year of uni now. So far my grades breakdown are:
    1st year: 3.6
    2nd year: 3.4
i was honors with distinction student in high school.
Something has happened to me. Plus i am losing my motivation, self respect and confidence………

It’s not that hard to get a 4.0 as long as you keep yourself away from distrations around you. Helps if you are around people that are studious and competitive. Thats what keep me going i.e. if there is somebody better than me in my class, then I push myself harder to compete. No joke but competition drives performace. I have a 4.0 so far in college. Bottom line - get around good people.

Hey soma..I like ur article, great job. I am a community college student in Michigan (HFCC). This is my first semester, I passed it with a 4.0 GPA. Im trying to go to a very good university, such as UM Ann Arbor, UCLA, UCBerkly etc.. The thing is, eventhough Im and American citizen, they will consider me as a non-resident which will make me pay like 31,000 instead of 8,000 in UCLA. All good universities will treart me the same. What do you think should I do?

Hello. I do agree with you that you can get that beautiful number. It does take hard work and much effort. But everyone says you need to “have a life”. I am in senior year and has had 4.0 my whole life. I have no clue to what the term ” no life ” means. I study. I enjoy it. So all the people that think that socializing is just as important as grades you can shut the hell up. I don’t like people my age. I don’t hang out with my classmates. I’ll start making friends in college when I meet actual people that also care about physics, engineering, and computers. But until then I’ll be a loner.

    Great article. 5/5 stars.

Great read. I’m in my third year of high school, semester 2 and it had taken me two years to actually get my rear into high gear. As of right now, I have a 3.5 and I’m trying to get a 4.0. I have these courses: physics, math, accounting, and fitness (lol). Does anyone have any tips/advice that could help me improve?

I dont care what ppl say about it being hard or impossible, you ever hear the saying if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything? The mind is a powerful thing its a matter of how much you want it. 3.5 is excellent for harvard? well then if you get a 3.5 how you gonna set yourself apart? you need to strive for higher to be on top. Some ppl may not be able to have a life and get a 4.0 but again its a matter of how much you want it.

Soma, take this as a compliment and nothing else, but….I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE YOU. Out of my two brothers and several of my friends, I feel that I am the only one with the “short end” and a one of a kind freak with no special skill from above like they have. Because of that, since I can’t pay for all of college right away, I need to be the best and most productive that I possibly can. Success is what I wish to change my middle name to. 4.0 is what I call…THE JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0 4.0……………………..AND NO OTHER GPA WILL SATISFY!!!!!!!!

You’re just the one I need, and to me, you are one of my biggest inspirations as of right now, besides Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, or any of my other hero other business strategists. Thanks, and congragalations on your achievements!!!!!
